The line on the invitation tells you more than you think. In the UK, "cocktail" means a midi dress, "formal" means floor-length, and "smart casual" still means a dress — the difference is fabric and finish rather than a change of category. Below is what each dress code actually asks of you, and what to wear when the invitation says nothing at all.
Black tie
The most formal code you're likely to see at a UK wedding, and almost always an evening event. For women that means a floor-length gown or a very dressy full-length maxi in a refined fabric — satin, crepe, chiffon with structure. Heels, an evening bag, and jewellery you'd call "proper" rather than everyday.
What doesn't work: printed cotton, anything above the knee, or casual sandals. If you're wavering between two options, take the longer one.
Black tie optional / formal
The couple would love floor-length but won't mind if you don't. A full-length maxi or a dressy midi in an elevated fabric both land correctly. This is the code where a one-shoulder neckline, a cape sleeve or subtle pleating earns its keep — detail does the formal work so the length doesn't have to.

Cocktail / semi-formal
The most common code at UK weddings, and the most misread. Cocktail does not mean short — it means a midi dress, most often, in a fabric that catches the light. Knee-length is fine. Floor-length can read slightly over-dressed unless the venue is grand.

Smart casual / garden party
Relaxed, but not casual — the distinction matters. A printed or floral midi, a linen maxi, or a well-cut dress in a lighter fabric all work. Block heels or elegant flats rather than stilettos, particularly if there's grass involved.
Smart casual is not an invitation to wear what you'd wear to lunch. It's an invitation to skip the satin.
Beach or destination
Light fabrics, light colours, flat or wedge sandals. A flowing maxi in linen or chiffon is the reliable answer. Avoid anything heavy, structured or lined — you'll regret it by the second hour.
When no dress code is given
This is the situation most guests actually face, and the answer is simpler than it feels. Default to a midi dress in a good fabric. It is almost never wrong at a wedding — dressy enough for a formal venue, relaxed enough for a garden.
If you want more signal, look at the venue and the time. A 1pm ceremony at a village hall and a 5pm ceremony at a country house are asking for different things, even with identical invitations. Evening start times lean dressier; daytime and outdoor lean lighter.
The one rule that outranks the dress code
Whatever the invitation says, don't wear white, ivory or cream. No dress code overrides that. It's also worth checking whether the couple has a colour scheme, and avoiding anything that puts you too close to the bridesmaids.
